Watch one of the very first exploratory trips to Christmas Island back more years than I would like to mention. This was the very first time Christmas Island had been explored with big big poppers. We had listened to stories about people having a go for GT's as a day off from the fly-fishing. You should of seen the guides faces when we turned up with all the large tackle, their faces just dropped and they asked us if we had anything smaller.... They said the lures were too big.... I asked what was the best day they had ever had fishing for GT's. The reply was 4 fish ... 4 ... I thought that's not many, was that per person? No per boat...Oh had we come to the wrong place had I got it all wrong? Well cut along story short on the first day we managed 11pr boat and the fishing only got better as the days went on. We even managed some time off for Wahoo and Tuna... Now if you go to Christmas Island and wish to popper fish, all the lodges expect you to turn up with big lures, popper rods and very strong reels. It was great to be some of the first to open up this side of the fishery and teach the guides some new styles of fishing.
